11% on Rotten Tomatoes with a production story more interesting than the film: a Spider-Man universe entry shot without Spider-Man, directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script that kept shifting, released into the exact week Sony’s license paperwork started expiring. Dakota Johnson plays Cassandra Webb like a woman stuck in someone else’s exam.
The time bending spider vision is the one invention with any energy; the rest is a predictable chase picture with three young women, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, doing better work than the movie deserves. Ishta Hunter’s cameo is a spoiler you can safely ignore, and Tahar Rahi’s villain is a plot device in a trench coat.
3 out of 10. If the Spider-Verse runs you left anything, this is not the way to keep it going.
