22% on Rotten Tomatoes, 5.8 on IMDb, the film that closed the Fox X-Men run: a Phoenix Saga with its third act already spent on the X-Men film that could not commit to it, and a production of reshoots and a producer’s public apology visible on screen. Jean’s possession plot lands as melodrama, Jessica Chastain’s Vuk a plot summary in a costume.
And yet, the good parts are real: the space rescue opening, the Dassault jet, and the quiet scenes between McAvoy and Lawrence play the family the best movies in this franchise were always about. The X-Men team shot that closes the franchise’s final trailer remains the single most beautiful thing these characters ever sat for.
