50% on Rotten Tomatoes is not an accident: a franchise undecided about its own future, shoved Electro, Rhino, Green Goblin, the Sinister Six rumor, and Peter’s birthday into 142 minutes. Jamie Foxx’s Electro is the best thing in it, a sad loner played with real feeling while the script throws lightning at him.
The New York chase on opening weekend shows what Webb could do with a city and a camera. The Gwen Stacy fall, played against the film’s own thesis about responsibility, still lands even in the mess around it. Sony walked away from the universe eight months later.
