Before Married… with Children, television families fixed each other over kitchen tables. Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill, selling every shoe counter monologue like a solo stage act) hated his wife, his kids, his couch, his job, and the audience was expected to laugh because they did too. FOX bet its existence on a show about a man who peaked being the high school football star in a district that only remembered one touchdown, and the gamble rewired what broadcast comedy was allowed to be.
Katey Sagal’s Peggy is the secret weapon: a woman this loudly selfish in 1987 was a small riot, and the later seasons let Kelly (Christina Applegate) and Bud (David Faustino) grow into their own kinds of awful with genuine comic craft. The show’s best trick was sincerity by omission, no lessons, no hugs, no growth: a sitcom that trusted the joke instead of the moral. Its worst habit was mistaking shock for structure, which is why eleven seasons had better and lesser halves.
The early seasons (three through five especially) are the version worth recommending: cheap, rude, and strangely liberating.
