Our Review
Return of the Jedi is the finale that plays its hits: a rescue at Jabba’s palace, a second Death Star, and the Emperor finally on screen, slurping evil through yellow eyes. The Tatooine opening is the best forty minutes of the original trilogy’s back half, and Ian McDiarmid’s Palpatine is so good he retroactively became the saga’s centerpiece.
The Ewoks remain the argument. As tactical plush they dent the stakes of the ground battle, but the film around them carries real weight: Luke confronting his father under the Emperor’s goading is mythic storytelling done with total sincerity, and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker lands exactly as hard as it needs to.
Jabba’s palace alone, with its droid dungeon and sarlacc bargain, is the last great practical set piece of the original run. It wraps the trilogy with warmth instead of doom, and the celebration ending still feels earned. Our score: 8/10. Tonight it completes the run; watch the throne room sequence with the lights off.
