The Empire Strikes Back

Our Review
The best Star Wars film and one of the best sequels ever made. The Empire Strikes Back does everything a middle chapter should: it darkens the stakes, splits the cast, and ends with the heroes broken and the villain’s shadow bigger than before. The Battle of Hoth alone sets a bar for spectacle that forty years of imitators still chase.
The cast is perfect: Mark Hamill gets a real arc under Yoda’s training, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher trade the best romantic dialogue the series ever wrote, and Darth Vader becomes cinema’s definitive villain with one line of dialogue at the end of a carbonite chamber.
Irvin Kershner directed the hell out of it, slowing the middle section down so the training scenes breathe while the Falcon’s crew gets chased through an asteroid field by the whole Imperial fleet. Every frame of the Dagobah swamp still feels wet. The Millennium Falcon threading the asteroid field still feels fast. The reveal still lands, even when you know it’s coming. Our score: 10/10. If you only watch one Star Wars tonight, it is this one, always.
