Family Ties

Manoel Carlos built Laços de Família, in 2000, around a question that still makes viewers flinch: what does a mother do when her daughter falls for the man she loves? Vera Fischer plays Helena, who steps aside, and Carolina Dieckmann plays Camila, whose leukemia diagnosis turns the delicate family triangle into the storyline that defined a generation of Brazilian viewers.

The writing is elegant and emotionally direct. The cancer arc famously stopped Brazil, and the show’s frankness about illness and obligation has aged better than most melodrama of its era. Reynaldo Gianecchini, Deborah Secco, Tony Ramos and Marieta Severo round out an ensemble that underplays beautifully, a rarity in this genre.

The pace is slow by modern standards, and some side plots wander badly, but the central story earns every episode it asks for. Come for the center and tolerate the margins.
