The first of the Paramount+ exclusive events jumps forty years into a future where the pandemic finally ended, everyone got older, meaner, and sadder, and the boys stopped speaking to each other. Stan sells insurance, Kyle is a lonely counselor, Cartman found God and spends his life rabbi cringe comedy, and Kenny became the scientist whose death pulls everyone back to South Park for one last attempt at fixing the world.
As a parody of gloomy prestige TV it works beautifully, shot like a gray streaming drama with the same few locations and a weary tone, and the adult versions of the boys are all plausible extrapolations of who they were at ten. The special earns its biggest laugh from a gut punch ending that plays the franchise’s own nostalgia against you, and the actual mechanics of the time travel fix in the follow up are a smarter sci-fi plot than most earnest shows attempt.
It runs under an hour and some gags about a certain streaming service’s content strategy are more inside baseball than the show usually aims for. Watch it with its direct sequel, because the two halves only really work as a pair. A solid, occasionally inspired pivot that proved the specials format could carry real story weight.
