A Batman-less Gotham, a stolen suit, and a production that never found its footing. Batwoman had genuine ingredients: Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane, a solid Alice as villain, and a city worth exploring. What it did with them is another matter.
The writing is the problem, season after season. Dialogue lands with a thud, plots lurch from one crisis to the next without building momentum, and the show keeps announcing its themes instead of dramatizing them. The behind-the-scenes turmoil (Rose’s exit after one season) forced a full pivot to Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder, who deserved better material than she got. The action is serviceable at best, cheap-looking at worst, and the whole thing feels like a network order nobody could figure out how to execute.
The honest verdict: a 2 out of 10. There are flickers of a good show in Alice and in Leslie’s effort, but three seasons of this is three seasons too many. The ratings collapse and cancellation were fully earned. Skip it entirely, Arrowverse completionists excepted, and even they should brace.
