Our Review

Harlem is the reason this works: Luke — bulletproof, super-strong, hiding from his past — takes on Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes (Mahershala Ali, the show’s towering presence: a musician’s soul in a gangster’s suit), and the first half is a genuine Harlem epic: the music (the Paradise Lounge performances, the hip-hop and soul needle-drops), the politics, the community texture — a superhero show that feels like a neighborhood.

The mid-season villain switch (Cottonmouth out, Diamondback in) is the famous stumble — Ali’s exit guts the show’s gravity and the back half trades street-level soul for genre chaos. But Mike Colter’s calm-steel Luke, Alfre Woodard’s Mariah (the politician-villain with the show’s best long-game), and the Harlem-is-a-character commitment make it essential for the Defenders-verse. The bulletproof Black man in a hoodie standing in a precinct — the image alone was cultural history.

Verdict: Watch the Cottonmouth arc — one of the best half-seasons of Marvel TV. The rest is bonus.
