The Friday the 13th prequel Bryan Fuller built before parting ways with it: Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini) as a mother in the years before the hockey mask, grief and secrets breeding the legend of the lake.
It is a horror prequel that asks the interesting question: what does it cost a woman to become a monster’s mother? Cardellini does wounded and terrifying in the same glance, and the show spends real time in the town’s claustrophobic social web before the blood starts. Horror fans should know the kills arrive on a schedule and the lore gets expanded (the show is not shy about its own mythology). A classy, nasty piece of work with real empathy at its core, which makes the violence land harder.
