Our Review
The Duffer Brothers’ Amblin machine became Netflix’s flagship and a generation’s shared myth: 1983 Hawkins, Indiana, a boy vanishes, a girl with a shaved head and telekinesis escapes a lab, and a group of kids on bikes discovers the Upside Down, a parallel horror dimension bleeding into their world. Season 1 is a perfect season of TV: the King meets-Spielberg atmosphere, the synth score, the kid ensemble chemistry, and David Harbour’s broken cop Hopper giving it an adult spine.
Season 2 (the Shadow Monster, Bob Newby’s heroic death. Sean Astin’s best role) and season 3 (the Starcourt Mall, Billy’s redemption) escalated with confidence. Season 4’s Vecna arc (the Hellfire Club, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” resurrected for a new generation, Max’s escape scene) proved the engine still runs at full power. It’s the most successful IP of the streaming era because it earns the nostalgia instead of renting it.
Verdict: Watch it. Friends don’t lie, and neither does the hype.
