The forgotten chapter: the original cast returned in 1973 for two animated seasons that are officially canon and quietly ambitious. Freed from budget limits by animation, the show went places live action never could: alien designs the 60s show could only dream of, and scripts by real science fiction writers including Larry Niven.
It is short (22 episodes, most under 25 minutes), genuinely weird, and a fascinating bridge between the Original Series and the movie era. Yesteryear, Spock’s time travel origin story, is considered a true classic by the fandom.
Our take: 7/10. For completists and the curious, a better watch than its reputation.
