Our Take

The partnership dies on screen: Walt, chasing Jesse’s phone for the ricin cigarette, triggers a fight in Jesse’s house that leaves Walt bleeding on the floor and the alliance over. Gus responds by firing Walt — and installing Jesse as the new cook. The episode’s final image is Walt, discarded, sitting in his basement assembling a weapon from a box of parts. The season’s midpoint: employment terminated, war begun.
