Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty

Our Review
Neon, fast breaks, and a maverick owner betting the house: the 1980s Lakers get the full spectacle treatment here, and sports history has rarely been this much fun. John C. Reilly is a joy as Jerry Buss, the playboy proprietor wagering everything on showtime basketball, while Quincy Isaiah charms as a rookie Magic Johnson learning to run the league’s most glamorous franchise.
The style is rowdy on purpose. Adam McKay’s production breaks the fourth wall, jumps between film stocks, and treats the boardroom like a comedy club, which will not suit anyone hoping for a stately biopic. Surrender to it, though, and the chaos becomes the appeal.
What keeps it from being pure sugar is the friction: egos clashing over money and credit, a coach fighting for control, veterans resenting the flashy kids. It ended after two seasons, and the cut still stings, because the ride was clearly just getting started.
Our score: 8/10. If you want pure energy with real history underneath, press play tonight and cancel your plans after one episode.
