Our Review
Adult Swim’s most unclassifiable pocket epic: a cop from Earth dies, is resurrected by a talking gauntlet scientist in a sword and-sandal alien world, and becomes a side scrolling hero with a mullet and a very casual attitude toward violence. Created by Mondo animators, it’s drawn in a deliberately flat, cut out style that looks like a ’70s Saturday morning cartoon filtered through a mescaline dream.
Six minute episodes fly by on pure deadpan absurdism. Apollo dispatches wizards and skeleton armies with the energy of a man taking out the recycling. It’s a joke delivery system, sure, but the jokes are consistent and the world (Rubicon) is a surprisingly coherent pastiche of pulp fantasy clichés. If Rick and Morty is a philosophy lecture with farts, Apollo Gauntlet is the fart, unadorned and proud.
Verdict: Watch it in one sitting, it’s 90 minutes total and it’ll break your brain a little.
