After surviving Godzilla's attack on San Francisco, Cate is shaken yet again by a shocking secret. Amid monstrous threats, she embarks on a globetrotting adventure to learn the truth about her family—and the mysterious organization known as Monarch.

Our Review

The MonsterVerse TV show that treats the kaiju as geology: after G-Day (the San Francisco Godzilla attack), a family — Cate, a teacher who survived it, and her half-brother Kentaro — follow their missing father’s trail into Monarch, the secret organization that’s known about the Titans for decades, while 1950s flashbacks (Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell playing the same character in different eras — the show’s structural trick and best casting) reveal Monarch’s origins: the expeditions, the cover-ups, the Skull Island years.

The monster stuff delivers when it arrives (the Godzilla sequences are film-quality, and the ice-Titan finale gives the season a proper kaiju climax), but the show’s real surprises are human: the sibling drama, the 1950s adventure trio, and the mythology-expansion that makes the MonsterVerse’s timeline feel lived-in. Slow-burn TV in a franchise of blockbusters — a family-mystery drama with giant monsters as weather.

Verdict: Watch it if you want your kaiju with actual characters.
