Our Review

Star Wars handed to anime studios with one instruction: go wild. The result is an anthology that’s the most consistently creative thing with the Star Wars name on it since the Disney acquisition. Freed from canon, each short brings a wildly different art style and genre: The Duel is a rain-soaked samurai western; T0-B1 is a Astro Boy homage about a droid who dreams of being a Jedi; The Ninth Jedi is an excellent single-episode setup that deserves its own series; Lop and Ochō is a stunning environmental parable.

Because it’s an anthology, quality varies — a few shorts overstay their runtime — but the volume system means there’s something for everyone, and the visual ambition across volumes (Science Saru, Production I.G, Trigger, Studio Colorido) is off the charts. This is what Star Wars looks like when it stops managing a franchise and starts playing.

Verdict: Watch it. Best enjoyed as samples — put on The Duel or The Ninth Jedi and see if you don’t finish the volume.
