Kaliane Bradley’s debut novel becomes a six part BBC series with A24 producing, and the pedigree alone makes this one of 2027’s most interesting bets. The premise: a secret government department rescues people from history, and a civil servant named Sophy gets promoted into the programme as a bridge, helping a rescued Victorian polar explorer adjust to the modern world. Then the forbidden romance starts, and the Ministry’s real intentions start to show.
Alice Birch, who adapted Normal People and Dead Ringers, wrote the scripts, and Aneil Karia directs. Aoife Hinds plays Sophy opposite Billy Howle’s Commander Graham Gore, with a cast that runs deep: Adeel Akhtar, Tamara Lawrance, Ciarán Hinds, and Aisling Loftus among them. The book is funny, strange, and sneakily moving, and the BBC plus A24 pairing suggests they are keeping its oddness intact rather than sanding it into a standard period drama.
The Early Word: filming around London as of August 2026, landing on BBC One and iPlayer in 2027, with Crave carrying it in Canada. Time travel romance is a crowded lane, but the source material is genuinely loved and the creative team is top shelf. Our anticipation is high. Full review after the premiere.
