Our Review

FX’s Snowfall spin-off moves the clock forward to 1990s Los Angeles, following Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John) as they try to reinvent themselves while the fallout of the crack epidemic fuels the rise of West Coast rap. It’s a smart pivot for the franchise — Snowfall was always at its best charting the cost of the game on the people who survived it, and Wanda’s arc was its most harrowing thread. Rebuilding her in a new era, adjacent to the birth of gangsta rap, gives the series both a new engine and a bridge to a music revolution the original only hinted at. The period detail is loving — the clubs, the fashion, the sound of LA shifting from Teddy Riley to Death Row. Early episodes carry the weight of inherited grief: these are characters the audience watched get broken, trying to be whole. That’s a richer foundation than most spin-offs get, though the show sometimes strains under the franchise’s obligation to commentary versus story. For Snowfall fans it’s essential; for newcomers it’s a solid period crime drama about reinvention and the industries — music and otherwise — that feed on reinvention.
