The story behind this movie is better known than its plot: Warner Bros panicked after Batman v Superman got shredded, hired a trailer company to recut a finished film, and shipped whatever survived. You can feel the scissors in every scene. Suicide Squad introduces its criminals with character title cards and pop songs, then jumps around like it lost pages on the way to the printer.
Will Smith coasts on charm as Deadshot, Viola Davis is genuinely scary as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie bolts away with the movie as Harley Quinn in her first live action outing. Everything else misfires. Jared Leto’s Joker, all grills and Lamborghinis, was cut down to a handful of scenes and none of them land. Its antagonist is a generic world ending swirl of CGI, and the climax is another beam of light in the sky, the decade’s laziest superhero ending.
There is a fun movie buried somewhere in the dailies, and James Gunn would eventually go make it. What reached theaters was a hastily stitched compromise that made a billion worldwide and pleased almost no one. Our score: 4/10. Worth one curious stream for Robbie and Davis, nothing more.
