The family sitcom of its decade, done with a mockumentary sheen and a cast with chemistry most shows would kill for. Three branches of one big family: the traditional Dunphys, the older man with the younger wife, and the gay couple with the adopted kid. In 2009 that structure was quietly groundbreaking, and the show wore it lightly.
Phil Dunphy is the engine: Ty Burrell’s optimist dad is one of the most lovable characters in sitcom history, and the Phil’sosophy bits alone justify the run. The honest arc: seasons 1 to 5 are excellent, the middle stretch coasts a bit, and the kids aging out changes the show, but it never crashes the way long comedies usually do.
Comfort food with genuine warmth and a million quotable moments. Watch it with your family, which is exactly what it is for.
Our take: 8/10. The last great broadcast family sitcom.
