Our Review
The WB’s own Animaniacs, from the same creative pair, and arguably weirder. A nerdy government clerk becomes a superhero who has completely lost the plot, in a cartoon narrated by a cartoon about his own adventures, with Tom Kenny giving a masterclass in escalating mania and a live laugh track you either accept as style or don’t.
The comedy engine is the collision of sitcom structure and unhinged animation: celebrity-voiced villains of the week, a narrator with story problems, and an episode where the hero visits the animated equivalent of the Warner vault. It is Animaniacs with the safety removed.
Two seasons, forty six episodes, short and perfect. Our score: 8/10. If you miss the 90s WB sound, this is the purest dose left.
