Haunted by a traumatic past, Jessica Jones uses her gifts as a private eye to find her tormentor before he can harm anyone else in Hell's Kitchen.

Our Review

The best first season of the Marvel Netflix era: Krysten Ritter’s Jessica — a hard-drinking PI with super-strength and PTSD — is stalked by Kilgrave (David Tennant, the MCU’s best villain: a mind-controller who genuinely believes he’s the good guy — the show’s thesis on coercion and abuse made flesh). Season 1 is a psychological thriller wearing superhero clothes: the investigation doubles as a survivor’s reckoning, and the show never flinches.

Ritter is a force (all armor and micro-cracks), and the noir texture — Jessica’s window-office, the sisterhood with Trish, Luke Cage’s introduction, the New York grit — gives the genre its first true detective story. Seasons 2 (Jessica’s origin) and 3 (the Sallinger arc) can’t match the Kilgrave year, but the character work stays elite. The most adult thing Marvel has put on any screen.

Verdict: Watch season 1 as one of the best superhero seasons ever made. Stay for Ritter.
