Our Review
The Early Word: HBO is remaking Harry Potter as a television series, one season per book, with an entirely new cast. Season 1 adapts Philosopher’s Stone and premieres December 25, 2026: a Christmas Day arrival that HBO is treating as its biggest swing since Game of Thrones.
What we know: John Lithgow is Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu is Snape, Janet McTeer is McGonagall, and the three leads are newcomers. Each season gets the full book, which means the story beats the movies had to cut (Peeves, the real Quidditch arc, the full mystery structure) finally get screen time.
The honest question: does it need to exist? The movies are beloved and recent. HBO’s bet is that television’s runway lets the books breathe in a way two hour films never could, the way fans have always imagined while reading. With the original film creative team advising and a reported decade long plan, this is a serious attempt, not a cash grab.
