Eleanor Shellstrop dies and ends up in the wrong afterlife, and the show that follows is the smartest high concept comedy ever aired. Every season reinvents itself (the season 1 finale is one of the great TV twists), and underneath the jokes about shrimp and frozen yogurt is a sincere philosophy seminar about what it means to be good.
Kristen Bell and Ted Danson are perfect, William Jackson Harper’s Chidi is the soul of the show, and the finale sticks the landing in a way almost no high concept show ever has. It is short (52 episodes), complete, and rewatchable.
Watch it cold. Do not read anything first. The twists are the experience.
Our take: 9/10. A perfect little philosophical gem.
