Melinda Gordon sees dead people at yard sales and estate liquidations in Grant, Ohio, and spends five seasons on CBS doing what network television does best: a gentle procedural where the mystery is how someone died and the payoff is a goodbye. Jennifer Love Hewitt plays it with a conviction that makes the impossible watchable. She buys the grief, so you buy the ghosts.
The formula is airtight by design: a spirit reaches out, Melinda digs through a dead person’s effects, her husband Jim (David Conrad) worries from the porch, and a revelation frees the ghost. Later seasons add a darker visual motif and a mythology question about Melinda herself that the show commits to rather than wiggles out of. The weekly workhorse guest performances are the real draw, and the show usually casts them well.
It is comfort television with a seance attached, honest about what it wants to be. The season five opener, built as a two part event, earns its tears.
