Our Review

A love letter to space opera with a surprisingly heavy heart. Gary Goodspeed, a lovable idiot serving a prison sentence alone on the Galaxy One, gets a companion: Mooncake, an adorable planet-destroying alien that everyone in the universe wants dead or captured. What starts as a goofy comedy about a dumb guy and his cute blob evolves into a genuinely dark serialized epic — by season 2 the show is killing major characters with real consequence, and the tone shifts stick.

The animation is gorgeous for a TBS budget, and the voice cast is stellar: Fred Armisen’s KVN (the annoying suicide-drone roommate), Steven Yeun as Little Cato, Ron Perlman as the Titan, and David Tennant as the villainous Lord Commander. The humor is hit-or-miss — KVN divides viewers sharply — but the show’s sincerity is its superpower. Canceled on a cliffhanger after season 3 when WarnerMedia gutted its animation slate, which still stings.

Verdict: Watch it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be furious at TBS.
