Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy set at the International Secret Intelligence Service, a spy agency where espionage and global crises are merely opportunities for its highly trained employees to confuse, undermine, betray and royally screw each other.

Our Review

James Bond, if MI6 were a dysfunctional family business and Bond were a narcissistic alcoholic with mommy issues. Sterling Archer is the world’s most dangerous spy and the world’s least professional human, and Adam Reed’s rapid-fire dialogue — drink! — turned this into the most quotable animated comedy since Arrested Development went off the air (it shares a DNA strand).

The spy seasons (1-5: from Mole Hunt through Vice) are the peak: anesthetized turtlenecks, tinnitus, Kenny Loggins at your danger zone. H. Jon Benjamin’s delivery, Jessica Walter’s Malice-er, Malory, and Aisha Tyler’s Lana hold the whole thing together. The later genre-shifts (dream seasons: noir, island, 1940s) got divisive, but the show found its feet again by going back to the agency and letting the characters age into actual people. Sort of. Loudly.

Verdict: Watch it. Do you want X? Because that’s how you get X.
