The best comedy on Netflix is about a retiree reading a newspaper want ad, and it should not work nearly as well as it does. Ted Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, an emeritus engineering professor who answers an ad for an elderly undercover operative, talks his way into a retirement community, and discovers that curiosity is not something retirement is supposed to switch off. Mike Schur built the series on Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, and he keeps the mystery light while letting the sadness sit at the edges.
Danson is a marvel of quiet wit. He listens on camera like almost nobody does, and the show trusts his face enough to cut away late. Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Stephanie Beatriz, and Mary Steenburgen all get the kind of scenes that sitcoms waste, and Eugene Cordero and Stephen McKinley Henderson give the retirement home at the center real texture. Jason Mantzoukas turns up in episodes that remember how to guest cast. Season two moved Charles undercover at a college and, by most accounts, found a second wind.
There is a practical reason to catch up now: Netflix announced in September that season three, filming in San Francisco, will be the last. Schur promised to conclude Charles’s journey properly, and the guest list for that final run (Nick Offerman, Bernadette Peters, Stephen Root, Christopher McDonald) reads like a victory lap. Cozy mystery is a crowded lane, but this one has a heart most of the competition keeps sanding off.
Our score: 8/10. Two easy seasons before the curtain falls, and one more on the way for the send off.
