Walt, Jesse, and Mike struggle over the future of their business, as occupational hazards weigh on Jesse.

Our Take

The buyout: Jesse and Mike want out (sell the methylamine, take the payday, escape the guilt — Drew’s death is the last straw for Jesse); Walt refuses. “I’m in the empire business.” The declaration, delivered to Jesse over the decommissioned cook equipment, is the series’ thesis finally stripped of euphemism: not family, not cancer, not provision — empire. Mike hears it and starts planning his exit; the hour’s cold open (Walt’s first cook with Gray Matter backstory) shows exactly when the disease started.
