The WB’s answer to Married… with Children was to add a narrator who openly despises the family, rewrites their scenes mid episode, and dates the daughter. Unhappily Ever After took Ron Leavitt’s instinct that a sitcom family could be cruel and pushed it into meta territory a full decade before meta became house style, and the stunt never eats the show because the cast commits harder than the gimmick.
Geoff Pierson’s Jack Malloy is television’s most functional wreck of a father, and Mr. Floppy, a house rabbit voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait as a profane nihilist, is the single best puppet in American comedy. Nikki Cox plays Tiffany like she is playing the whole family like a board game, and the Ray Charles theme sets the terms in nine words. The cast leans into the shamelessness so completely that the cynicism starts to read as affection.
The early season episodes are pure provocation; the middle stretches soften around Tiffany. Watch the early ones, the reason the thing is remembered at all.
