The Lion King spin-off that quietly out-funnyed its source in pure gag volume. Timon and Pumbaa roam the world as a buddy-comedy roadshow, breaking the fourth wall, self-aware, occasionally mean in exactly the right measure, and completely unbothered by canon or consequence. Ernie Sabella’s warm Pumbaa gives the show a soul the scripts do not always earn.
The format is loose and gloriously silly: monster hunts, road trips, musical numbers, spaghetti-Western parodies, and Timon schemes that always end with Timon getting his comeuppance. It even courted controversy with a banned episode, proof it had teeth for a kids show.
One hundred sixty nine episodes guarantees filler; the musical episodes and the Western parodies are the top shelf. Our score: 6/10. Dip into it rather than binge, and the laughs compound.
