The Disney Afternoon’s detective show, and the most grown-up of the early block. Chip and Dale run a case-of-the-week detective agency, with madcap inventor Gadget Hackwrench building the gadgets, Monterey Jack the muscle (allergic to cheese, obviously), and Zipper the fly along for backup. The writing trusts kids to follow real clues.
The villain is Fat Cat, a mob-boss feline running a criminal empire out of a dump with the seriousness of a crime family drama, and the show keeps a sly wink at its own tiny scale. The early two parter Meet by Jelly Jams plays like miniature film noir with fur.
Sixty five mostly short episodes, and the case structure makes any of them a fair entry point. Our score: 7/10. The shortest commitment of the classic block, and a legitimately fun one.
