The show that started the Disney Afternoon empire. A treasure-hunting duck billionaire, his three kid nephews, and a pilot’s son go looking for gold every week, and at its best this is an adventure serial disguised as a kids cartoon: lost cities, sunken pyramids, time travel, and a duck who would rob a museum if the plot allowed it.
Alan Young’s booming Scrooge is the foundation, and the rogues gallery is legendary: the Beagle Boys, witch Magica De Spell, rival tycoon Flintheart Glomgold, inventor Fenton Crackshell. The show was unafraid to actually scare its audience, and an early two parter about Scrooge losing his fortune remains the emotional peak of the whole block.
Syndication life means filler episodes, and the later seasons lean broader, but the peaks are legendary and every DuckTales since, including the excellent 2017 reboot, is built on this run’s bones. Our score: 8/10. Start with the Life and Money of Scrooge two parter and judge it then.
