The city before the bat: Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) joins a police department that is itself the biggest criminal organization in town, and the show asks what Gotham was like while Bruce Wayne was still a kid with a broken heart.
The answer is an operatic mob war with a rogues gallery assembling in slow motion: Penguin’s rise (Robin Lord Taylor, magnificent) from umbrella boy to kingpin is the show’s spine, and the villain origin stories are the actual main characters. The final season jumps ahead and finally, briefly, delivers a proper Batman. Five seasons of gorgeous, grimy, frequently ridiculous noir. Watch it for Taylor and Cory Michael Smith’s Nygma, stay for a city that feels like a character.
