Our Review
The Devil quits Hell, opens a piano bar in Los Angeles, and starts solving crimes with the LAPD. It sounds like a joke pitch, and for the first half of season 1 it sort of is. Then the show figures out what it actually is: a surprisingly sincere story about self hatred, accountability, and whether people can change, wearing a police procedural as a very loose disguise.
Tom Ellis is the whole engine. His Lucifer is charming, petty, wounded, and genuinely funny, and the show’s best trick is letting the comedy carry real emotional weight. Lauren German’s Chloe is the straight man who grows into a true partner, and the supporting bench (Maze’s arc especially) earns its payoffs across six seasons.
The famous comeback: canceled by Fox after three seasons, saved by Netflix, and given a real ending with a proper final season, which is more than most shows of its kind get. Watch past the procedural phase: the serialized mythology that takes over from season 2 onward is where it becomes great.
Our take: 8.5/10. The rare high concept show that actually lands its ending.
