Our Review
Josh Brolin rides a horse into a hole in reality and comes out on the other side of a genre. Outer Range ran two seasons on Prime Video, 2022 and 2024, and is the most confident thing on this list that most people have never finished explaining to a friend: a Wyoming rancher saga that turns into cosmic horror, with an ancient void at the edge of the Abbott ranch swallowing men, timelines and eventually the show’s own genre conventions.
Season one, from Brian Watkins and a writers’ room including the Russo brothers as executive producers, is a land-war drama with a black hole in the middle: Brolin’s Royal Abbott fights the neighboring Tessiter family, the government and physics itself to keep his ranch. Season two (a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, up from the divisive 79% debut) goes full sci-fi and mostly sticks it. The ending closed the story. Amazon did not renew it.
It asks a lot in episode one. The opening hour is a cattle-mutilation mystery that hasn’t earned its strangeness yet, and the ranch-drama politics can feel like 1899 in a cowboy hat. Give it two episodes. If you bounce, it genuinely isn’t for you.
For anyone who liked Under the Banner of Heaven’s landscape-as-menace or wants Westworld’s ideas with a working plot, Outer Range is two tight seasons and done. Our score: 7.5/10.
