Episode Summary & Review

Summary

Hank’s behavior becomes increasingly more unpredictable and volatile, which leads to a confrontation with Jesse and problems at the DEA; Skyler wants Walt to make a deal; and Gus’ decisions result in some serious consequences.

Our Take

The masterpiece. Hank, warned of the cousins’ ambush by an anonymous call (Gus’s move, erasing them as threats and framing the warning as loyalty), fights for his life in a parking lot: one minute, two assassins, an axe, and the most brutal, spatially coherent action sequence the show ever staged. The episode’s build — the warning, the drive, the dead calm of the parking lot — is a masterclass in dread, and the aftermath (Hank survives by killing them both, Marco’s axe inches away) reshapes the season: the Salamancas are spent, and Gus holds the board.
