FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel is a genuine epic and the best new show in years. In 1600s Japan an English pilot lands in a country on the edge of civil war, and the series builds a political chess match where every bow hides a knife. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are tremendous, and Anna Sawai’s translator is the soul of it.
Mostly in Japanese with subtitles, and worth every second of reading. It swept the Emmys for a reason. This is what big television looks like when adults make it.
