Each two season block recasts the royals, Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, Imelda Staunton, and each actress builds the same woman at a different weight of years. The Diana years are its most operatic stretch, with Elizabeth Debicki’s performance earning every award that exists.
It takes liberties with private conversations, as it openly admits, but the craft is impeccable: palaces, politics, and the slow corrosion of duty. Television on the grandest scale.
