Our Review

Douglas Adams’s “holistic detective” — who solves cases by following the universe’s interconnectedness rather than clues — becomes a maximalist comedy-mystery: Dirk (Samuel Barnett, a sunny British chaos agent) drags Todd (Elijah Wood, the universe’s punching bag) into a case involving a missing cat, a murdered millionaire, a body-swapping cult, an assassin who feels everything, and a black project, all connected because everything is connected. That’s the show’s actual thesis: the universe is a machine of meaningful coincidence, and Dirk is its instrument.

Season 1’s plot (the Rowdy 3, the holistic cult, a time-travel loop that recontextualizes everything) is gloriously convoluted in the way Adams would approve. Season 2 goes bigger (Wendimoor, a fantasy world inside a coma patient’s mind — one of TV’s boldest swings) and ends on a cliffhanger the cancellation never resolved. Fiona Dourif’s knife-obsessed Bart is a force of nature; Hannah Marks’s Amanda gets the best arc. Chaotic, warm, and unlike anything else.

Verdict: Watch it. Everything is connected — especially you and this show.
