Our Review
The best new sci-fi mystery since Severance: 10,000 people live in a 144-story underground silo, governed by rules everyone follows and nobody explains, the display screen shows a dead, toxic world; going outside is death; asking why is punishable. Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette, an engineer turned-sheriff, starts pulling threads after a series of “cleanings” that don’t add up, and the show’s slow drip conspiracy unravels with confidence: every answer opens a worse question.
Adapted from Hugh Howey’s novels with Apple money (the silo set is spectacular, the spiral staircase a character, the mechanical level a rust cathedral), the cast is deep: Common’s judicial menace, Tim Robbins’s smiling IT bureaucrat, Harriet Walter’s mayor, and Ferguson doing star turn work as a woman whose grief becomes investigation. The season 2 siege (the whole society deciding whether to believe the screen) is superb television. The mystery pays; the world deepens.
Verdict: Watch it. The best dystopia on TV since the genre’s golden age.
