The best techno thriller ever made for TV, and the medium’s most honest portrait of mental illness. Rami Malek’s Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and vigilante hacker with dissociative identity disorder, isolation, and a narrating voice that talks directly to you, his “friend”, is recruited by fsociety to bring down E Corp, the conglomerate that owns half the world’s debt. What follows is four seasons of narratively daring TV: an unreliable narrator, a midseason-1 twist that changes every scene you’ve watched, an episode shot as an one take sitcom fever dream, and a finale that answers the show’s central mystery with heartbreaking grace.
Sam Esmail’s direction (he eventually directed every episode) is cinema: long takes, unbroken monologues, macabre needle drops, and technical authenticity, the hacking is real; security professionals still use the show in training. Christian Slater’s Mr. Robot, Carly Chaikin’s Darlene, Grace Gummer’s Dom, the ensemble is flawless. It’s a show about loneliness that finds real warmth in its ending. “Hello, friend.”
