Our Review
Kaitlin Olson spent eight years playing the sweet one on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then spent two seasons playing the worst person in any room on Fox, and the switch is glorious. The Mick is a single camera sitcom about Mackenzie Mickey Molng, a chain smoking, foul mouthed con artist from Providence who parachutes into Greenwich when her estranged sister and billionaire brother in law flee the country to escape a fraud indictment. The catch standing between Mickey and the mansion: three kids, teenage Sabrina, future dictator Chip, and fragile little Ben.
The critics called it mean spirited at launch and the Rotten Tomatoes number (58%) still reflects that first wave. The audience number (91%) reflects what actually happens over 37 episodes: Mickey is the most honest character on television precisely because she lies constantly, and the Pemberton children, especially Thomas Barbusca’s sociopathic Chip, are her creations more than her assignments. The show trust its audience completely, never softening a joke to make a character lovable. If you like your comedies without a safety net, this is the last network sitcom that truly worked that way.
The 37 episode run is perfect binge math. Fox canceled it in May 2018 after a ratings slide, which the fanbase never forgave and never stopped talking about. Both seasons live on Hulu and Disney+, and the pilot, The Mitzvah, is 25 minutes of the best joke structure the network aired all year.
