Hulu’s raunchy time travel action comedy: Josh Futturman, a janitor gamer, beats an “unbeatable” video game and discovers it was a recruitment test, the last two humans on Earth need him to travel back and prevent the extinction. The joke engine is the collision of slacker comedy tropes with action movie stakes: Josh is a coward with no skills whose main asset is genre savviness.
Josh Hutcherson commits completely to playing a loser, and Derek Wilson’s Wolf, a feral warrior from a death future who has to learn to exist in the polite past, is the show’s comedy MVP (his adjustment to domestic life is a gift). Eliza Coupe’s Tiger is the straight ahead assassin who grounds the mayhem. Three seasons of escalating timeline chaos, unapologetically crude, sneakily clever about determinism versus free will, and it ends, a complete story, no cliffhanger.
Verdict: Watch it. The dumbest smart show about time travel, or the smartest dumb one.
