Hulu’s raunchy time-travel action-comedy: Josh Futturman, a janitor-gamer, beats an “unbeatable” video game and discovers it was a recruitment test — the last two humans on Earth need him to travel back and prevent the extinction. The joke engine is the collision of slacker-comedy tropes with action-movie stakes: Josh is a coward with no skills whose main asset is genre savviness.
Josh Hutcherson commits completely to playing a loser, and Derek Wilson’s Wolf — a feral warrior from a death-future who has to learn to exist in the polite past — is the show’s comedy MVP (his adjustment to domestic life is a gift). Eliza Coupe’s Tiger is the straight-ahead assassin who grounds the mayhem. Three seasons of escalating timeline chaos, unapologetically crude, sneakily clever about determinism versus free will, and it ends — a complete story, no cliffhanger.
Verdict: Watch it. The dumbest smart show about time travel, or the smartest dumb one.
