The redemption arc Westeros needed. Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin went back to the source. Fire & Blood, the history of the Targaryen civil war, and built a show that’s pure dynastic tragedy: no White Walkers, no chosen one, just two halves of a family devouring each other over a throne. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke as Rhaenyra and Alicent carry the show, former friends whose duty hardens into enmity, and Matt Smith’s Daemon is the rogue uncle every family fears: magnetic, monstrous, and somehow the crowd pleaser.
Season 1’s bold time jumps (recasting the leads midseason) pay off in a finale that turns a childbirth into a war declaration. The Driftmark episode. Aemond claiming Vhagar, the biggest dragon alive, is superb staging. Season 2’s pacing drew criticism (the Blood and Cheese adaptation pulled its punch), but the Battle at Rook’s Rest, two dragons ambushing one, is the best dragon combat ever filmed.
Verdict: Watch it. Game of Thrones remembering what it’s good at: family, politics, and things with teeth.
