Our Review
Genndy Tartakovsky’s wordless masterpiece: a caveman and a Tyrannosaurus rex — both grieving, both the last of their kind — forge a bond across a prehistoric world of violence and wonder. Half the episodes contain no dialogue at all; the show communicates everything through composition, sound design, and brutality so beautiful it becomes poetry. The blood is earned — every mauling is staged with weight — and the tenderness lands harder for it.
Season 1’s episodic survival stories (the mammoth funeral, the plague, the witch, the apes) build Spear and Fang into one of animation’s great duos. Season 2 sends them into early-encounter humanity — Vikings, the sea, the mythic register — and the climax pays the whole journey off in images you won’t shake. The closest thing to pure cinema TV animation has produced this century.
Verdict: Watch it. Spear and Fang’s story needs no words. It will wreck you anyway.
