My Adventures with Superman is the Superman story for people who grew up on anime: Jack Quaid’s red rimmed, comedy first Clark Kent arriving in Metropolis as a baby reporter who is terrible at hiding in plain sight, falling for a ferocious Lois Lane played by Alice Lee who clocks his secret in the first episode and decides she would rather date Superman anyway. Ishmel Sahid’s Jimmy Olsen completes the Planet trio, with Max Mittelman’s Lex Luthor as the long fuse antagonist, and Kiana Madeira’s Kara arriving as Supergirl gave season two its gravity, and season three, which finished airing this August, put The Death of Superman through the anime filter.
What makes it work is that the anime styling is not decoration: chase choreography runs on shonen logic, the Kents are warm without being precious, and the romance carries the series instead of decorating it. DC lore is used with real affection, Kryptonian technology is treated as its own language rather than magic, and the show pivots from a pratfall at Perry White’s desk to a genuine Kryptonian threat without whiplash. The series holds a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from 47 reviews, which for a superhero cartoon is company it shares with almost nothing.
IMDb sits at a modest 7.6 from 8,800 votes, below the fan conversation and miles below the critics. It is one of the two best Superman cartoons this century and the only one with this much heart. Watch it with the romcom angle unhidden: it is a better Lois and Clark than most Lois and Clark episodes ever were. All three seasons stream on Max, with the Adult Swim late night reruns proving the adult audience is the real one.
