Our Review

The MCU’s warmest Disney+ show: Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, a Jersey City teenager, Avengers superfan, fanfic artist, gets powers of her own, and the show is a coming of age story first and a superhero story second. Vellani is a genuine discovery: her Kamala is unguarded joy, and the show’s Pakistani-American family life is the most warm, specific, lived in family in the MCU.

The powers change (from comics embiggening to cosmic crystal energy) divides fans, but the visual language, the paint splash art project flourishes translating her inner fan artist onto the screen, is the most stylistically alive the MCU has been on TV. The Partition flashback episode (the MCU’s first real history lesson) is the show’s prestige hour, and the finale lands everything a debut promises.

Verdict: Watch it. The best superhero debut of the Disney+ era.
